Bible verses are a great way to start in your studies of who Jesus is and why his claims are so important. And the Bible should be the first place we look when establishing truth.
Did you know that there are many reasons we can be confident that Jesus is the only way? Sometimes it can get confusing, because there are people who say there are many roads to heaven.
And they make it seem almost reasonable. So is Jesus the only way to heaven?
When we consider the evidence, there is only one credible way to heaven. And it’s through Jesus Christ.
So let’s do just that -consider the evidence.
One of the ways you can know for sure that Jesus really is the only way to heaven is by comparing the Old Testament prophecies to the New Testament fulfillments:
Old Testament Prophecies hundreds –and even thousands- of years ahead of Jesus’ incarnation- tell of the pre-existent Messiah-to-come. These prophecies give amazing details about the life and times of the Messiah –God’s Anointed Deliverer who would fix our broken world and make it right again.
Here’s the first one:
Jesus is the Only Way #1
Old Testament prophecy #1:
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14, ESV
New Testament fulfillment #1:
And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy -the Son of God.” Luke 1:30-35 ESV
It’s easy to see that the New Testament fulfillment is an exact match to the Old Testament prophecy!
Jesus even told his followers on the road to Emmaus to look to these Old Testament prophecies:
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. -Luke 24:26-27 ESB
Jesus is the Only Way #2
Old Testament Prophecy #2:
Now muster your troops, O daughter of troops; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek. But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth from me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. Micah 5:1-2, ESV
New Testament Fulfillment #2:
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: “And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.” Matthew 2:1-6
Again, the New Testament fulfillment of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem is an exact match of the Old Testament prophecy written 500 years before. Not only that, but King Herod knew to ask the scribes about the prophecy -an indication that the Jewish people were expecting their Messiah to come by a virgin birth -in Bethlehem. So they expected the prophecy to be fulfilled!

Old Testament Prophecy #3
A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” Isaiah 40:3, ESV
New Testament Fulfillment #3
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Luke 3:1-4
This Old Testament prophecy of John the Baptist along with it’s New Testament fulfillment is another of the many amazing prophecies that have convinced so many skeptics to believe in the Messiah.
We will soon take a look at some more of the prophecies Jesus must have shown his disciples on the road to Emmaus.
Fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies in the New Testament is amazing in the exact details of the fulfillments. Some of these fulfilled prophecies took place with exquisite timing.
The time windows when these prophecies were required to happen were very tight. And some of them had to occur in a very precise way in order to be a true fulfillment.
Mathematicians have calculated the odds of these events taking place purely by chance. It’s a decimal point with so many zeroes after it that it’s practically zero.
Just consider this for a moment: Fulfilled prophecies -many of them-separated by hundreds or thousands of years from their proclamations- demonstrate the actions and the superior knowledge of God over his creation.
Who else but God himself would be able to display this amazing foreknowledge of future events that would take many centuries to unfold?
Jesus is the Way to Eternal Life
The claims Jesus made about himself, and the things he said about his own mission are not the everyday claims of a typical man. Either they are true, or they are not.
As the famous 20th century intellectual C.S. Lewis put it, (paraphrased) Christ either [1] deceived mankind by conscious fraud, or [2] He was Himself deluded and self-deceived, or [3] He was Divine. There is no getting out of this trilemma. It is inexorable. (Source)
So it’s also interesting to consider the things Jesus said about himself:
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:11, ESV
In this passage, Jesus describes himself not just as a shepherd, but the Good Shepherd -invoking the words of Psalm 23, in which the Psalmist is describing how God is our shepherd.
If there is any doubt in the reader’s mind that Jesus is equating himself with God, just read on for a few more verses and see where the religious rulers begin to pick up stones to stone him to death. Because that was also their impression of what Jesus was saying about himself.
Jesus is the Only Way Eyewitness testimony
We can learn a lot from the testimony of eyewitnesses who saw Jesus face-to-face and recorded the miracles, how he turned the tables on clever foes who tried to confound him and how he lived the perfect life.
So… what did people say? What was the eyewitness testimony of those who spent time around Jesus Christ?
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him, “Simon, son of Jonah, you are happy because you did not learn this from man. My Father in heaven has shown you this. Mark 16:15-17
This is the eyewitness testimony of Simon Peter that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God. Then Jesus finishes these verses by agreeing with Peter’s assessment that Jesus is Lord of all. He does not try to change Peter’s testimony.
Jesus is the Only Way -Radical Conversions
One factor about the Lordship of Jesus Christ that you don’t always hear about is the radical conversions of people close to him.
During his ministry, Jesus’ own family did not believe he was the Messiah.
So his brothers (and sisters) said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” For not even his brothers believed in him. John 7:3-5
Later Jesus’ brother James meets him shortly after the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15:7. He later wrote the book of James and became the leader of the church in Jerusalem.
James’ death as a martyr is a very well-established historical fact. Scholars Michael Licona and Gary Habermas researched the historical facts of the resurrection and presented them in The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus, using the Bible and extra-Biblical sources.
The radical conversions of family, friends, disciples and foes of Jesus Christ are compelling evidence of his resurrection and Lordship.
Many of these converts -who were once were against him- chose early and painful deaths by persecution rather than deny the truth of the events they saw with their own eyes.

James wasn’t the only one. Almost all of Jesus’ disciples were also martyred. Many of his other followers were viciously persecuted.
What reason did the scholars give for all these people to stick with their beliefs? They were eyewitnesses.
For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 2 Peter 1:16
Jesus is the Only Way -Empty Tomb
After 2000 years, Jesus’ tomb is still empty.
The stolen body theory – and the swoon theory- are not logical ideas. They have zero support in scripture, in non-scriptural testimony and in historical records.
These theories are mere wishes by some folks who choose to not believe in the face of great evidence that Jesus rose from the dead just as he said he would.
The stolen body theory and the swoon theory have been confirmed as failed theories. These days, they aren’t regarded as worthy of consideration –even by the most ardent skeptics and cynics.
In short, the swoon theory lacks medical credibility, and the stolen body theory completely loses any credibility in light of the facts surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It also lacks eyewitness support.
Jesus is the Only Way -Writings of the Early Church Fathers
The writings of the early church fathers give us additional context about the faith of the early church. They confirm details about the Biblical accounts from a nearby perspective.

These writings are from a generation or two later than the writings of the Apostles, so they have historical context. They give us insight so we can get a better sense of some of the historical details and facts from that era.
Jesus is the Way to Eternal Life
The prophecies of Jesus Christ, the fulfillments of those prophecies, the claims of Jesus Christ, and the eyewitness testimony –and the events that took place after his resurrection are amazing evidence that his life was no ordinary life, and he was no ordinary man.
The only logical conclusion to reach after seeing piles and piles of evidence is that Jesus is who he said he is. He is God incarnate –God in human flesh.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ” John 14:6
Christian Exclusivism
Critics have often taken shots at Christianity over the doctrine of Exclusivity –that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven.
The opposite of Exclusivism is Religious Plurality –or Universalism. Both Plurality and Universalism declare that all roads lead to God. Both schools of thought take religions that are completely opposed and make believe they are the same.
Consider this quote by a world-famous Christian apologist (defender of the Christian faith).
“Pluralism assumes all religions are fundamentally the same and only superficially different. The fact is once you study them, you realize all religions are fundamentally different –and, at best- superficially somewhat similar.” –Ravi Zacharias.
But the reality is that even the Pluralistic religions are actually exclusivist, because they reject the Exclusivism of Christianity. In so doing, they themselves now become Exclusivists, since they now exclude Christianity.
They have now defeated their own argument – while unaware that they themselves have adopted this failed, self-defeating argument.
Pluralists argue that all roads lead to God. But they defeat their own argument when they exclude the exclusive claims of Jesus Christ.

Great thinkers have studied the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They have considered what the Bible says about the greatest life ever lived, and the how his life affected the lives of so many others around him.
