There are over 8800 promises in the Bible. They include direct promises and prophecy.
These promises and prophecies have seen many, many confirmations through the centuries. They do so much to build the believer’s faith.
So what does the Bible say about God’s promises?
Well, the Bible has something to say about God’s promises, and what it says is just the kind of wisdom you’d expect from God’s word:
…by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire… 2 Peter 1:4, ESV emphasis added
God has made many, many promises to his people that we see unfolding even today. These promises are “precious and very great.”
And they are divinely designed to power our faith, so it’s a good idea to keep them in front of our eyes and remember them “so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature.”
We can plainly see that God’s promises to Abraham about the great nations that would come from him have been fulfilled many years after they were first delivered.
Not all of God’s promises are rosy, feel-good promises. Sometimes God promises us trying times.
That’s right! Some of God’s promises might make us a bit uncomfortable.
These promises are just as real as the feel-good promises:
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33, ESV.
This kind of promise is to warn us to be ready for difficult times.
What is the First Promise in the Bible?
It’s God speaking to the serpent that deceived Eve. Here’s the promise God made to the serpent:
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring[a] and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15, ESV
This promise was fulfilled continuously through the years.
But its ultimate fulfillment was when Jesus Christ dealt a crushing blow to Satan with his death on the cross, followed by his victorious resurrection and glorious ascension.
But there’s even more to come!
God’s amazing promises were given to transform us by the renewing of our minds so that we will glorify him!
It’s good to remember that as we read through them.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
“And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.
But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.
When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.”
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
But whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”
A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. …
And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” …

The Bible verses above are what God will do. You can take them as they are, and study, meditate and pray through them until they are made manifest according to God’s perfect timing.
One of the secrets of getting answers to prayers is to base our prayers on the promises of God. That is, aligning ourselves with God’s word so we are in tune with his perfect and pleasing will.
Daniel did that in Daniel 9:1-27. He discovered through books that the 70 years prophesied by prophet Jeremiah that Israel would spend in the land of captivity was completed, and God had not made any move to return them back to their land.
He took up the matter up in prayer, asked God for mercy, and reminded Him of His promise.
God responded with great power, more promises, visions, signs, and wonders.
God’s promises are exceedingly great. Use them as a guide to your fulfillment.
