What Does the Bible Say about Husband and Wife?

Joyful marriage.

What does the Bible say about husband and wife in marriage? Well, it was God’s idea in the first place.

God instituted marriage in the Bible. It was never man’s idea.

After he created Adam, there was no suitable companion for him among the animals in the garden of Eden, so God created Eve as his companion for him.

So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. Genesis 2:21, ESV

The God who instituted marriage is the one that can teach us how to be successful in it, so He provides rules that guide marriage in the Bible which are still relevant today.

The marriage institution is collapsing in the unbelieving world. Even Christian marriages are under pressure.

Also, divorce reached epidemic proportions long ago, and all kinds of man-made alternatives to godly ordained marriage are also being embraced by people of our generation, but the standard of God remains the same.

“Your marriage is the gospel you are preaching to your children.” – Matthew L. Jacobson

But in the church- and especially where both husband and wife worship together, pray together, attend church together and read the Bible together- this is where happy marriages thrive.

Anyone willing to follow what the Bible says concerning marriage will experience the joy that God had put in it, and their homes will be like heaven on earth.

How a Husband Should Treat His Wife

We learn from the book of Ephesians how a husband should treat his wife:

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, Ephesians 5:25

In marriage, love is the order of the day. [And the week, month and year!]

“Nothing can bring a real sense of security into the home except true love.” – Billy Graham

For a husband to love his wife as Christ loves the church, means giving up his own desires to place his wife’s desires above his own.

It’s always good to remember that “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.” Proverbs 18:22

In the day-to-day grind, it can be so easy to forget that a wife is a sign of the Lord’s favor.

If the husband treats his wife like she’s a gift, she will be his present!

But there’s more. Everybody knows the wife is supposed to submit to her husband, but did you know the husband is also supposed to submit to his wife?

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. –Ephesians 5:21

This clearly applies to both husband and wife. It comes at the very beginning of the passage on husbands and wives, so it sets the tone for the entire passage.

It’s a sentence that seems to get lost in the shuffle sometimes, so let’s all remember it. Submission isn’t only for the wife!

A happy marriage is a marriage where each partner actively looks out for their spouses’ needs.

The rest of the passage is a clinic in personal relations:

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[c] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. -Ephesians 5:25-33

There’s so much to unpack in this passage, there could easily be a whole post on it!

The short version is –if a husband loves his wife like Paul is saying here- he will be attending to her every spiritual and physical need as he places her needs at or above his own.

He will encourage togetherness in the marriage just as we are to draw near to our Lord who gave himself for us.

And how about these sage words from Jesus Christ himself?

28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.Mark 12:28-31 ESV

What Does the Bible Say About How a Wife Should Treat Her Husband?

God’s word recognizes that a husband’s needs are different from the wife’s needs. While husbands are told to love their wives, it might be surprising to learn that wives are not told to love their husbands!

This doesn’t mean that wives shouldn’t love their husbands. It just means there is a different emphasis in the marriage relationship. The Bible tells us in plenty of places that we should love our fellow man.

So  –in this passage- wives are told to respect their husbands:

However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. Ephesians 5:33, NIV

There are plenty more passages below relating to God’s Biblical guidance for husbands and wives, so be sure to read all the way down.

Bible Verses about Wife Respecting Husband

Likewise, wives, be subject to your husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external, the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear, but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their husbands, … 1 Peter 3:1-6

This is a command from God that must be strictly obeyed if peace must reign in the home. By God’s ordination, the husband is the head of the family, and the wife is his ally.

The wife is to submit and respect her husband. Civilization has injured the marriage institution sorely in this area. Today, women are equal to men in practically all areas of achievement. The saying that “what a man can do, a woman can do better,” is true today more than ever before.

Unfortunately, many women bring this mindset to their marriages, and they think things will work out fine. It will always bring problems because it contradicts God’s guidance for marriage.

The husband is also expected to love and respect his wife and not treat her as a tool or property to be used and discarded, but respect must first come from the wife to the husband.

Bible Verses About Husband and Wife Arguing

Arguments at home are a common phenomenon among many married couples, and it can come over different issues. If not nipped in the bud, it can take a big toll on a marriage.

The will of God is not for husbands and wives to argue with each other. Instead, they should join hands together to run their homes so that the purpose of God for bringing them together can be achieved.

Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Colossians 3:13

A marriage can stand strong where there is love, forgiveness, and fear of God.

Marriages take work. Married couples must work hard to keep their marriage.

Marital union is not to be toyed with or handled with levity as if there is another option if it fails.

We are bound to offend each other because we are humans, but there should be room for forgiveness all the time. The Bible says “Love covers a multitude of sins.”

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its way; it is not irritable or resentful; 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Where there is love, couples will not find it difficult to forgive each other.

In all, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. When a partner in a marriage fears God, he will work upon himself or herself so as not to offend the other partner.

Arguments must not be encouraged, especially when the children are present and when you want the presence of God to abide with you in your home.

Wife Praying for Husband Bible Verses

Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 1 Corinthians 7:5

The wife is her husband’s chief ally; she is to give him full support so that things can go well in the home. One of the ways women can support their husbands is to pray for them.

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. Proverbs 2:6-8

All men need prayers because they are the heads of their families, as well as the prime target of the enemy – Satan. Many homes have been scattered because the husbands made a grievous mistake that could have been avoided if someone had stood in the gap for them.

David might have been saved from the sin of adultery and murder which almost ruined his life if his wives had prayed for him.

It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. 2 Samuel 11:2–5

Always pray for your husband for protection, peace, wisdom, provision, clear vision, help from above, etc. Whenever issues come up at home, instead of arguing with him, go before the Lord and cry to Him in prayer, and bring your husband back to your side.

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we can confidently say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me? Hebrews 13:5-6

Bible Verses About Husband and Wife Duties

Both husband and wife have roles to play in their marriage to make it work. Failure to do this will spell doom to their home.

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33

Husbands must love their wives, and wives must respect their husbands. This is the first law of marriage as it seems, and where it is available it makes all other things work out easily. The two of them must cooperate to run the home.

The husband must take the leading role all the time, he must not relegate his duties to his wife. He must carry his wife along in all decisions he is making, and must not keep any secret from her. The wife must be open to her husband, satisfy him in all things, and make the home comfortable for him so that he will not prefer the company of other women to that of his wife.

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Peter 3:7

The two of them must plan for the future of their home. They must both work to bring income home and take care of the children. They must teach, and guide their children diligently knowing that God will hold them responsible for their welfare.

Both husband and wife should be best of friends, savoring and seeking the company of each other at all times. They must eat together, sleep together, play together, pray together, etc. and have all things common.

Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. Exodus 21:22-25

“When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

Ephesians 5:28-33

In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. …

Luke 16:1-31

He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ …

Song of Solomon 1:2-4

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine; your anointing oils are fragrant; your name is oil poured out; therefore virgins love you. Draw me after you; let us run. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine; rightly do they love you.

Psalm 51:1-19

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. …

Final Thoughts

God ordained the home to be the manifestation of His power and glory. He put all his plans of populating and running the affairs of the whole earth upon just a family, the family of Adam and Eve.

He invested so much in the marriage institution to make it one of the mysteries of dominating the world and fulfilling His mandate for man.

Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24

Marriage is more than just finding a suitable companion; it is a holy union that brings more lives into the world. It is the only relationship that is heavenly ordained to last till death.

What are you doing to make your marriage work, or are you tearing it apart with your attitudes? Know that your home is a blessing from God, and He will hold you responsible for not achieving the purpose why He gave it to you.

Husbands love your wives; wives respect your husbands.
