In many of his teachings, he used nature to teach the people about the will of God, and what He expects from them. In Matthew 6, Jesus warns against fretting and worrying about what we do not have or what we cannot get, by pointing us to the birds of the air who neither sow nor reap, yet never go hungry for a day. Then he mentions the lilies of the field: And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Matthew 6:28-29, ESV Jesus also tells us of the lilies of the field who do not toil, but surpass king Solomon in glory. He made us understand that God can take care of all our needs. In the parable of the sower Matthew 13: 1–9, Jesus told us what happens whenever we hear the word of God, that the state of our hearts will determine whether the word will benefit us or not. When God wanted to create man, He said "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and the birds of the heavens, and the livestock, and all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." What that means is that God wants a creature who will be able to take charge of all other creatures on earth. This creature will lead others in protecting the earth and make it remain as God created it as much as possible. Genesis 1:28, ESV Man, the protector of the earth must multiply and fill the whole earth, so that he can effectively play his role. He gave Adam one major responsibility in the garden of Eden -tending the garden, and making sure that everything is in order as God wants it. God had ordained that man be nurtured from nature. He can eat plants and animals, but they cannot eat him, hence for him to be sustained he must make sure that nothing goes wrong with the natural order ordained by God. From time to time, God reminded the children of Israel -the people He had a covenant with- of this all-important instruction. He even made it part of His laws and statues to them when they left the land of Egypt and became a nation. He told them to observe Sabbath - for them, their animals, and their land to rest. Final Thoughts The whole creation from the depth of the oceans to the expansive space above the earth is beautiful to behold, and one cannot but wonder the kind of wisdom that conceived and created them. Indeed, the Bible calls God "the only wise God," which He had demonstrated in His creation work. He did not only create nature; He has put inexhaustible resources in it that have been sustaining man right from the time that God created him. Through nature we learn more about God; just look at the moon, stars, ocean, trees, animals, birds, and host of others, and you cannot but acknowledge that God has made them.
