One thing for sure; the Bible is not silent about the Sabbath. But sometimes there’s confusion regarding what the Bible says about the Sabbath.
Many people want to know how to keep the Sabbath holy according to the Bible.
Well –who better to ask than Jesus Christ himself? What does Jesus say about the Sabbath?
Good thing is –Jesus had plenty to say about the Sabbath. And what Jesus says on the subject has now been reverberating for 2000 years:
5 Or have you not read in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? 6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. 7 And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” Matthew 12:5-8 ESV
What does Jesus mean when he makes the “Lord of the Sabbath” statement?
- Jesus has full authority over the Sabbath -Matthew 28:18
- Jesus is the creator of all things -Colossians 1:16
- Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it –Matthew 5:17

What Did Jesus Say to the Pharisees about the Sabbath?
When Jesus Christ made the statement above from Matthew 12:5-8, he was speaking directly to the Pharisees.
These additional laws put extra heavy burdens on the Israelites.
Well, Jesus has a way of getting right to the point:
27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27, ESV
But that’s not all!
It’s not just what Jesus said to the Pharisees, it’s also what he did -right before their eyes.
Jesus deliberately performed healing miracles on the Sabbath in front of the Pharisees to put their hypocrisy on full display.

But no -Jesus wasn’t through yet!
He also claimed –boldly and directly- in the faces of the Pharisees- that he-Jesus of Nazareth- is in fact God incarnate! And he did it over-and-over-and-over again!

What Does Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy Mean?
The Sabbath Law is an example of remembrance God gave to his chosen people.
That’s why the commandment to observe the Sabbath begins with the word “remember.” It’s the only one of the 10 Commandments that’s worded this way.
While we’re on the subject, what is the Sabbath?
The Sabbath is a day of rest instituted by God. In fact, God himself took the very first Sabbath rest after he finished creating all things in Genesis.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Genesis 2:2-3, KJV
It’s the 7th day of the week. According to the Book of Genesis, it begins at sundown Friday and ends at sundown Saturday.
Why does it go from sundown-to-sundown rather than the western way of defining the day as we all do it?
Because that’s how God defined it in the book of Genesis. But there are so many other details to know about the Sabbath.
How do you rightly divide the Word of Truth over this important subject?
Well, you can start by looking through the Bible for all the verses you can find on the Sabbath. And there’s a whole bunch of them coming up…
But don’t stop there. It takes some study to understand it and rightly divide it. A lot of people have questions about the Sabbath.
For example, they want to know why most Christians attend church on Sunday instead of on the Sabbath.
Key Point: Jesus Christ is our Sabbath. Hebrews 4:9-10
All of the Old Testament laws were fulfilled in him. By making him our Lord and Savior, we fulfill the entire law and enter into his rest.
This was what the Bible –God’s word- teaches.
Salvation isn’t found in a day. Salvation isn’t found in a law. Salvation is found in no other name but the name of Jesus. Acts 4:12
