Have you ever wondered what hell is like and whether or not it’s an actual place where certain people go to?
Many say hell is some kind of fictitious place -until they see all the Bible verses about hell that were uttered by Jesus Christ himself.
The Bible tells us that hell is very real. It’s a place that was made for Satan and his demons.
But people choose to join the demons every time they reject the work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That’s right. Hell is a choice people make.
Jesus is 100% God and 100% man. He lowered himself from his heavenly glory to present Himself as the ultimate sacrificial lamb (as declared by John the Baptist) who paid the price for our sins in full at the cross.
Ever since mankind fell under the grip of death in the garden of Eden, hell has become our default final destination.
We inherit sin and without Jesus, we die in sin without a way to escape hell’s everlasting torment.
But Christ defeated death and sin by rising on the third day as we’re given the chance to be forgiven of our sins if only we believe in what Jesus did for humanity.
In essence, the Lord gives us a free ticket to heaven.
All that we have to do is believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and we will be saved (Acts 16:31 ESV).
Hell and death are now both defeated and under the feet of the Messiah, who came as fully human and fully God to redeem mankind.
But don’t get it twisted – you’ll only evade the eternal flames of hell if you believe in Christ.
Dying as an unsaved person who rejected the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus puts many on a highway to hell, literally.
Unfortunately, even many Christians fail to realize this and we do not properly warn our relatives, friends and neighbors of the tragic consequences of hell and what it really means for so many of the lost.
The Bible has plenty of verses related to the eternal devastation of hell.
Below you’ll find dozens of specific passages from Scripture that speak about this horrible place of endless fiery torment.

Bible Verses About How to Deal With Death
Is Hell Eternal Bible Verse
Here are a few very fitting Bible verses that show exactly how long hell lasts:
Matthew 25:46
“And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Matthew 25:41
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”
Revelation 20:10
“And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
2 Thessalonians 1:9
“They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.”
Revelation 14:11
“And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”
Clearly, Scripture provides a definitive answer – hell lasts forever.
Although trying to visualize eternity is totally impossible with our finite human brains, just keep in mind that it’s simply a torment that doesn’t end.
For those who end up in hell, it’s totally game over.
The pain and suffering will have no end, which is quite hard to grasp.
We’re used to temporary pain as even if you’re in deep agony in this life, it’ll eventually come to a stop, whether you die or not.
We have no comparison or concept of endless pain in our current state, which makes it a challenge to understand eternal damnation.
But the torment in hell’s neverending flames is something that keeps its residents in non-stop pain.
There’s no break, no time off and no relief.
The Gates of Hell Bible Verse
These are the particular Bible verses that talk about the gates of hell:
Matthew 16:18
”And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Isaiah 38:10
“I said, In the middle of my days I must depart; I am consigned to the gates of Sheol for the rest of my years.”
If you’d like to know more about the expression “The Gates of Hell” here’s a whole post about it.
Note that the term “gates of hell” doesn’t have a literal meaning as in actual gates through which the damned souls of the lost can enter hell at will.
“Gates of hell” stands for the policy and power of Satan and his demonic army.
Hell doesn’t have actual physical gates because there’s no way out once you end up there.
The key takeaway here is that the gates of hell will not prevail as we already know that Jesus will crush all evil when He returns.
How Hot is Hell Bible Verse
Here are a couple of verses from Scripture related to how hot hell is:
Revelation 21:8
“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Revelation 14:10
“He also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.”
Isaiah 30:33
“For a burning place has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.”
Revelation 20:14-15
“Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
The Bible lets us know that hell burns with fire and sulfur.
The same two elements that God used for destroying the sinful cities Sodom and Gomorrah.
This means one thing – hell is one truly HOT place.
Bible Verse Hell Has Enlarged Itself
There’s only a single verse from Scripture that talks about how hell has enlarged itself:
Isaiah 5:14
“Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite and opened its mouth beyond measure, and the nobility of Jerusalem and her multitude will go down, her revelers and he who exults in her.”
Hell enlarging its appetite is clearly a metaphor for the growing number of unsaved people who go to hell.
The way to heaven is a narrow path, but the way to hell is a broad path.
Matthew 7:13-14
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
This place of fiery torment devours human souls every second and minute as iniquity seemingly abounds in these last days.
Hell opens its mouth wide to receive the masses of human beings who die in sin without knowing Jesus Christ.
That’s the real tragedy.
Jesus in Hell Bible Verse
The Bible doesn’t say anywhere that Jesus went to hell. This is surprising to quite a few people.
There are two particular verses that are often misinterpreted though:
Matthew 12:40
“For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
1 Peter 3:18-19
“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison.”
One reason for people falsely believing that Christ went to hell is the Apostles’ Creed that includes the words “He descended into hell.”
But that’s not supported by Scripture.
Still, the Bible does say that Christ spent 3 days in the heart of the earth.
However, it wasn’t in hell – Jesus was in Abraham’s bosom i.e. the blessed side of Sheol or hades.
Sheol is used to describe the realm of the dead in Hebrew Scriptures, while Hades is the New Testament Greek version of the same term.
And the Bible teaches us that there are two sections of Sheol or Hades – one of the blessings and one of judgment.
The accommodation of saved people is called Abraham’s bosom, Abraham’s side or paradise, while the accommodation of the lost is called hell.
Now consider that there’s a great chasm between the two sides of Sheol (Luke 16:26 ESV) and think about the rich man and Lazarus story from Luke 16:19-31 ESV.
There’s no way out of hell for those already there, so it wouldn’t make sense for Jesus to go there.
And why would Christ go there – to add more insult to injury to the unsaved souls who are tortured day and night?
No, Jesus spent 3 days in the blessed part of the heart of the earth
Burn in Hell Bible Verse
Below are several very fitting Bible verses about burning in hell as the final destination of the unsaved:
Matthew 3:12
“His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Matthew 13:42
“And throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Malachi 4:1
“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.”
Isaiah 30:33
“For a burning place has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.”
Needless to say, dying without accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is a one-way ticket to burning in hell. Forever.

After that he must be released for a little while. Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection.”

Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.”

Final Thoughts
There are plenty of Bible verses about hell that give us all of details we need to know about this place.
Hell is a place of eternal torment, weeping and gnashing of teeth.
And if this wasn’t bad enough, there’s no escape from hell for those who end up there.
Once in hell, they’ll be forever separated from our Creator as they rejected God’s free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
It’s so simple and easy that we have to be completely insane to reject it.
Really, all anybody has to do to avoid going to hell is believe that Jesus died on the cross for their sins and that God raised Him from the dead.
That’s it. They don’t have to do ANYTHING extra.
